A will is a written instrument that, at death, allows you to designate who will receive your assets (property that does not pass by beneficiary designation or some other form of joint ownership) after you die; whether your beneficiaries receive their inheritance outright or in trust who will act as your personal representative, and who will become guardian of your children if you die while they are under the age of majority.  Anyone with minor children should consider executing a will.
